Digitization in the Higher Education of Romania Mediocre at Best?

While much has been said about the importance of integrating e-learning platforms into the daily work of students in secondary schools and high schools, too little is said about the digitization of higher education in Romania.

Now, in the pandemic, it’s not just first-year college students who are confused or dissatisfied with what’s going on around them, but also their older peers. Why? Because without resilient education systems in place in the context created by the COVID-19 pandemic, the quality of education tends to decline greatly.

Paradoxically, because there are quality standards set at European level already before the pandemic, in terms of digitization of education, in Romania, this topic has received greater importance only in recent months. The forced transition to online has brought to light a problem that was perhaps previously rarely brought to the tables of ministries, educational institutions or NGOs. However, from March until now, making digitization a national project has been more of a slogan than a real commitment, say representatives of the National Alliance of Student Organizations in Romania (ANOSR).

Too many habits and practices in this regard were not done even before the pandemic, and that’s because in 2019, Romania ranked second to last in the EU in terms of the state of digitization, according to the DESI 2019 Index (Digital Economy and Society Index).

Although the European framework clearly says that there must be digital equipment in educational institutions, along with infrastructure and connectivity to support high-quality educational content, things are going slowly in Romania.
